In Leipzig, our existing research teams offer an exceptionally strong base for the sustainable translation of scientific innovation into healthcare. We will integrate the key initiatives and established research institutions of the region: the universities in Leipzig, Max-Planck-Institutes (MPI-MiS, MPI-CBS), Fraunhofer institutes (IZI, IMW), all leading hospitals in the area (University Clinics Leipzig, Heart Center Leipzig, St. Georg Hospital, the BMBF Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (, the Helmholtz centers for environmental research and the Leipzig site for radioligands), and numerous specialized research groups. These research groups direct important studies such as SaxoCell, SaxoChild, SMITH, LIFE, and LIFEChild, among others. These players are complemented by company-building initiatives such as Biosaxony, SpinLab, or SMILE.

To drive this effort, we assembled a group of excellent scientists and clinicians to form the backbone for the research teams. Jens Meiler and Thomas Neumuth will coordinate the effort. Humboldt professor Jens Meiler and his team develop algorithms for Protein Design. Professor Thomas Neumuth is an expert in developing intelligent medical devices, semantic data integration, interoperability, smart workflows, and AI-based decision support in healthcare. The team of researchers will be complemented by an international senior advisory board with members representing fields of technology and application, such as Ulrike Köhl, Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology and Erhard Rahm, Head of the ScaDS.AI-Center, as well as Antje Körner and Uwe Platzbecker representing clinicians with a translational vision.
